This was a name I didn’t even consider as a replacement when Watford sacked Quique Sánchez Flores.

When they did the deed with Flores, they confirmed that the appointment of a new head coach was imminent. That new head coach was apparently Roger Schmidt but it didn’t happen and left the club who don’t make managerial changes during the season scrambling around, doing just that, for the third time in under two years.

They’ve turned to Nigel Pearson, the very same Nigel Pearson who made those seriously disrespectful comments about our club back in 2014, suggesting we weren’t even professional. That was when he was at Leicester but, having crawled away from the bottom with a late run, he kept them in the Premier League but lost his job after his son was involved in incidents in Thailand and was replaced by Claudio Ranieri.

He’s since managed Derby, very briefly. Appointed in the summer of 2016, he was suspended in September after a row with owner Mel Morris and departed in October. He then joined OH Leuvren who have the same owners as Leicester. He was sacked there in February of this year.

He’s now back in English football, back in the Premier League and with Watford who turn over managers almost as quickly as most clubs see supporters go through the turnstiles. He’s signed a contract initially until the end of this season.
