Nick Pope made his competitive England debut last week, getting his first ever start in what was his second appearance for his country, and he then returned to Burnley and to give us a man of the match performance at Watford.

1920 burnley nick pope 00 500x500Although he didn’t have too many big saves to make, his performance was an assured one that helped us keep out Watford during a disappointing first half and then, right at the end, with the win secured, he made a top save to deny Gerard Deulofeu a consolation goal.

He was only just ahead of his central defensive pair in both the man of the match and the player ratings. He secured 29% of the man of the match vote, just ahead of James Tarkowski who had a 28% share with just six votes less. The pair had battled it out throughout the three days of the vote. Ben Mee took third place with 17% while fourth place went to Charlie Taylor who had a 4% share of the vote.

One goalkeeper and three defenders and those same four players took the top four places in the player ratings and in the same order. Again Pope was not too far ahead of Tarkowski with the pair scoring 8.21 and 8.14 out of 10 respectively. Mee was the third player to score over eight; he had a rating of 8.07 to claim third place with that fourth place again Taylor’s who scored 7.83 out of 10.

The result has given Pope the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with Tarkowski winning six points along with four points for Mee and two for Taylor. It’s stretched Tarkowski’s lead at the top slightly, he is now 16 points ahead of Mee as once more the two central defenders set the pace. Pope’s performance has moved him ahead of McNeil into third place.

We’ll be voting again from Saturday following the game against Crystal Palace. It should be available within an hour of the final whistle.
