Burnley defended superbly last week, conceding just the one goal to earn a point from a 1-1 draw, but the main plaudits were reserved for Nick Pope who turned in his best performance of the season to date.

He made three fantastic saves, but he wasn’t called upon as much as he might have been because of an excellent defensive performance in front of him and it is no surprise that most of those behind him in the point winning places in the man of the match vote and the player ratings were defenders.

Pope won both comfortably. He polled 76% of the man of the match vote with Charlie Taylor taking second place with 12%. Just 4% of the vote was enough for Matěj Vydra to win third place and Matt Lowton was fourth with just a 2% share.

Pope was the first player to hit a player rating over nine in the league this season. He scored 9.03 out of 10, again ahead of Taylor whose rating as 8.29. Lowton was in third place with 7.94 and Ben Mee came fourth with a rating of 7.91 out of 10.

It’s given Pope ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with six points for Taylor, three for Lowton, two for Vydra and one point for Mee.

Those points haven’t had any effect right at the top of the table where Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski share the lead. Nathan Collins and Maxwel Cornet are third and fourth but Taylor, Pope and Lowton are moving ever closer.

With the international break this week, our next vote will be underway a week on Saturday after the home game against Crystal Palace.
