Back in the 1960s, Liverpool had a Saint at centre-forward but last Thursday we had a Pope in goal on what proved to be a glorious night for the Clarets when Ashley Barnes scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot.

The champions were stunned, Klopp found everything he possibly could to complain about as his team lost a Premier League game at home for the first time in nearly four years with Nick Pope turning in another outstanding performance in front of ten other players in superb form.

He won the man of the match but given the performances alongside him, particularly from the two central defenders, it was some achievement to win 59% of the vote. Ben Mee just edged James Tarkowski, Mee taking a 13% share with Tarkowski winning 10% as they took second and third places with Ashley Barnes, netting that important penalty after winning himself, coming fourth with 8% of the vote.

The player ratings were high, as you would expect, with two players scoring more than nine and another four going north of eight. The two nines were Pope and Tarkowski who took the top two places with ratings of 9.13 and 9.11 out of 10 respectively. This time Dwight McNeil, back in the starting line up after injury for the first time since Christmas, was third with a rating of 8.54 while Mee made fourth place with a score of 8.48 out of 10.

That’s five players winning points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year. Pope has won another ten points while Tarkowski and Mee collect five and four points with McNeil winning two points and Barnes picking up one point.

That’s stretched Pope’s lead at the top of the table to 14 points and he’s no ahead of both Tarkowski and Charlie Taylor with Mee just one point below them and Brownhill a further two points behind.

You can still VOTE for your Fulham man of the match until just after tomorrow’s final whistle against Aston Villa.
