Only Blackburn Rovers stood in the way of our under-21s and a place in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup but they didn’t stay in the way for long with the Clarets beating them 3-0, and that’s a familiar scoreline for home games against them, in yesterday’s semi-final.

Sadly, a decision was made to play this behind closed doors and it meant this was only the second home game all season I’ve not been able to attend, the other being the Premier League Cup game against Arsenal in September when it was brought forward six hours at just a couple of hours notice.

It seems I’m destined not to see us win key games against our local rivals but it was good to hear that we won the game 3-0 with goals from Joe Westley, Seb Thompson and Deji Sotona.

Westley netted the opener just three minutes before half time when he converted a Jez Davies cross from close range and that lead was doubled early in the second half when Thompson came inside and hit an unstoppable effort past the visiting goalkeeper Felix Goddard.

The final goal was scored by substitute Sotona who went on a run past around six defenders before slotting the ball home.

It’s left us scheduled to play in the final for a second successive year and a third time since 2019. Our opponents this time are Barrow who have beaten Accrington in their semi-final. The final is expected to be played at the County Ground in Leyland, the venue for all county finals, but will now be part of the pre-season for the under-21s.

It is very likely that some of the players involved will not feature in the final with them expected to be released by the club. The decisions have been made and the players to be released have been informed.

The teams were;

Burnley: Harry Moss, Alex Healy-Byrne, Dan Sassi, Jack Turner, Dane McCullough, Joe Bauress, Jez Davies (Kade Ratchford 59), Will Hugill, Seb Thompson, Joe Westley (Deji Sotona 59), Tom Tweedy (Keelan Williams 81). Subs not used: Sam Waller, Brad Grant.

Blackburn: Felix Goddard, Leo Duru, Jake Batty, George Pratt, Matthew Litherland, Charlie Weston, Harrison Wood, Zak Gilsenan, Sam Burns (Junior Nsangou 79), James Edmondson (Jalil Saadi 57), Georgie Gent (Harley O’Grady-Macken 57). Subs not used: Jordan Eastham, Kristi Montgomery.
