It was billed as an under-23 pre-season game, but the Clarets took the opportunity to play some first teamers in this final warm up game against National League Stockport County.

We included Will Norris in goal, Matt Lowton and Nathan Collins in defence along with wide man Aaron Lennon, who is looking more and more likely to make a permanent return, and striker Matěj Vydra.

Stockport hadn’t conceded a goal through pre-season but the Clarets won the game 3-1 and we scored all four goals with Stockport’s coming from a Lowton own goal.

After Stockport had hit the bar with an early effort, we took the lead when Lewis Richardson got in and hit a shot beyond Hinchcliffe in the Stockport goal, firing home into the far corner from a tight angle.

The lead didn’t last too long. A Tom Walker cross into the Burnley box was headed into his own goal by Lowton and minutes later they missed a good chance to go in front. It was Burnley who scored next to regain the lead; Owen Dodgson volleyed home after a ball from the right found him.

It was 2-1 at half time but ten minutes into the second half the scoring was complete when new signing Collins (pictured) scored his first Burnley goal, heading home a Lennon corner.

With first team, under-23s and under-18s all in league action by next Monday, that’s pre-season over with this win in Stockport’s cup final.

The teams were;

Burnley: Will Norris (Sam Waller 78), Matt Lowton, Nathan Collins, Bobby Thomas, Anthony Glennon, Aaron Lennon, Mark Helm (Ne-Jai Tucker 60), Anthony Gomez Mancini, Owen Dodgson, Lewis Richardson, Matěj Vydra.

Stockport: Ben Hinchcliffe, Trialist, Ash Palmer, Ethan Pye, Ryan Rydel, Lewis Earle, Jordan Keane, Elliot Newby, Ben Whitfield, Tom Walker, Alex Reid.

Referee: Jon Moss (Horsforth).
