Having been back in training for just over a week, we played our first two pre-season friendlies this afternoon with concurrent games against Shrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers at Gawthorpe.

It was the Shrewsbury game that had the first news of goals but it wasn’t good news with both Scott High and Shaun Whalley scoring for the visitors. We did pull a goal back through last season’s leading goalscorer Chris Wood but at half time we trailed 2-1.

There was better news in the Tranmere game where we went in front with a Matěj Vydra before Bobby Thomas equalised with a header just before half time following a corner.

The two second halves produced just the one goal. There were no further goals in the Shrewsbury game that ended in a 2-1 defeat but fit again Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson scored with a really good finish to complete a 3-0 win.

None of Ben Mee, Kevin Long, Jack Cork and new signing Will Norris were involved in today’s games.

The teams were

v Shrewsbury: Nick Pope (Lukas Jensen ht), Matt Lowton (Marcel Elva-Fountaine 75), James Tarkowski, Charlie Taylor, Anthony Glennon, Ne-Jai Tucker (Trialist ht), Ashley Westwood, Mace Goodridge, Dwight McNeil, Chris Wood, Max Thompson (Joel Mumbongo ht). Sub not used: Rob Harker.

v Tranmere: Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Phil Bardsley, Jimmy Dunne, Bobby Thomas, Erik Pieters, Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (Cricky Conn-Clarke 78), Josh Brownhill, Josh Benson, Robbie Brady, Jay Rodriguez, Matěj Vydra. Subs not used: Marc Richter, Will Richard, Matty Rain, Lewis Richardson.
