Premier League 2 campaign kicks off tonight
With the first team and under-18s having started their seasons on Saturday, it’s the turn of the under-23s tonight with an away game against West Bromwich Albion being played at New Bucks Head, the home of AFC Telford.
It’s a much changed squad from last season. Players such as Marc Richter, Jordan Cropper, Matty Rain, Mace Goodridge and Marcel Elva-Fountaine have left us, and we are without Lukas Jensen and Joel Mumbongo who are out on loan at Carlisle and Accrington respectively.
The squad has been boosted with players stepping up from the under-18s and with the signings of Mark Helm, Jacob Bedeau, Harry Williams and Ethen Vaughan who have come in from Manchester United, Scunthorpe, West Brom and Norwich.
There is one other change which will be seen on the touchline. With coach Steve Stone having moved up to the first team, we currently have Michael Jackson in interim charge. He took over for pre-season, We lost the first three games against Rangers, Ayr and Lancaster before beating Ashton Athletic, Wrexham, Grimsby, Blackburn and Stockport.
With this being our second season in Premier League 2, and remaining in Division 2, we can look back at this game last season. Strangely, we played the two games against West Brom within a week of each other. We won at home but seven days on came back from West Brom with a 2-1 defeat against a very strong West Brom team. All the goals came in the second half with the Baggies going 2-0 up with goals from Grady Diangana and Callum Robinson before we pulled one back with Anthony Gomez Mancini (pictured) scoring our goal.
That game was played at the Hawthorns but it’s Telford tonight and a venue that I remember with very little affection given my only visit was for the FA Cup tie in 1986.
For the first time since March 2020 we have an under-23 game with spectators able to attend. Admission is £5 adults and £1 juniors. Kick off is at 7 p.m.Share this page :
