Premier League defence confirmed – and on to the midfield

Nick Pope was selected in goal, Kieran Trippier and Stephen Ward at full back and we can now confirm the two central defenders who have claimed a place in our best ever Premier League team as the first vote starts to find the midfield.

It will come as no surprise that the two central defenders who have just left the club have won the two places. James Tarkowski received 47% of the votes while Ben Mee was not too far behind with 44%. With everyone having two votes, that means 94% and 88% voted for them.

Michael Keane was never a challenger, but was third with 6% of the votes cast, a total of 95 motes, while Michael Duff won 33 votes.

It’s not a bad back four is it? Three internationals and a captain who surely should have received international honours.

Today, we begin the search for two central midfielders. There are nine to choose from, starting with Graham Alexander (33 appearances) and Kevin McDonald (26) who played in our first Premier League season. Jack Cork (152), still with the club, also played in that first season,

Moving into 2014/15, we have Dean Marney (41) and David Jones (37) and following our last promotion in 2016 we signed Steven Defour (51) and Jeff Hendrick (122) with Ashley Westwood (162) arriving in January 2017. The only player to qualify since is Josh Brownhill (78) who signed in January 2020.

Again, as it was with the central defenders, you will have two votes to fill the two places in the team. Voting is now underway and will run until the end of Wednesday.
