Burnley’s FA Cup tie tomorrow against Peterborough United will be refereed by Select Group 2 official Rob Jones from the Wirrall who will be refereeing us competitively for the second time.

His previous Burnley game came last season in the League Cup defeat at Burton when he had a shocking night and it was a reminder of the first time I saw him referee when he actually took centre stage with an awful performance in a pre-season friendly against Preston at Deepdale.

Jones has been fast tracked. He only became a Football League referee ahead of the 2016/17 season but quickly became a Select Group 2 official and has recently become the latest newcomer to the Premier League.

It was August 2016 when he refereed his first Football League game between Newport and Mansfield and by the end of that season he’d been given two games in the Championship, one at Barnsley and then at Preston. It was in the second half of the following season that he started to referee Championship games regularly and this season he’s only once dipped below that level for a game.

When we played Newcastle recently, Tim Robinson became the new ref on the block in terms of the Premier League but a week later, while we were at Bournemouth, Jones was given his first game when he took charge of Sheffield United’s 1-0 win at Brighton (see picture above) and, it is believe, a promotion to the Select Group could be on the cards for him.

This season, in total, he’s refereed a total of 19 games which have seen him hand out 66 yellow cards. No game has been card free but there have been no red cards, his last red was to dismiss Preston’s Ben Pearson in a home defeat against Leeds last April. of those yellow cards this season, 27 have gone to home team players and 39 to away team players.

Jones’ most recent game was the 1-1 draw between West Brom and Leeds, the top two clubs in the Championship right now. There were five yellow cards in that game. West Brom had Kyle Bartley and Filip Krovinovic carded alongside Leeds’ trio Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Helder Costa.

Tomorrow his fourth official is Matt Donohue who is in his second season as a Football League referee. We are one of 13 ties using VAR tomorrow and on duty at Stockley Park is Mike Dean.
