Tomorrow sees us facing West Ham United at the London Stadium in just our second Premier League game of the year and it will be refereed by Chris Kavanagh who was with us as recently as our final game of 2020 and our 1-0 home win against Sheffield United.

His performance in that Sheffield United game was refreshing. more so that it came just two days after the dreadful Robert Jones refereed the game at Leeds, and I can only repeat my words from just over two weeks ago that, other than a couple of games, he’s been fine when refereeing Burnley.

He’s now refereed eleven domestic games and the yellow count has gone up to 36 with 17 of those cards going to home team players and 19 to away team players with six of those coming in his one game since ours which was the FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Newcastle.

His last red card was at Arsenal, back in July when he sent of Eddie Nketiah in their 1-1 draw at Leicester. The red card came out again in this cup tie to dismiss Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe but a visit to the pitch side monitor changed that. The player was shown a yellow card instead, one of six in the game. The others went to team mate Cedric Soares along with four Newcastle players Cieran Clark, Jamal Lascelles, Isaac Hayden and Andy Carroll.

For tomorrow’s game Tim Robinson will be fourth official and we can only hope that Kavanagh doesn’t suffer an injury given this referee’s performances in two Burnley games, the most recent being last season’s home game against Newcastle. Simon Hooper will be on VAR duty. His most recent Burnley game was last season’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.
