The first ever match report on Up the Clarets covered our 4-1 win against Derby County at the Turf back in January. It was entitled Ram-Shackelled and I make no apology for using the same title again after Derby’s play off semi-final today against Hull.
The play-offs are a strange affair. If you finish seventh or below it leaves you a bit jealous that you’re not involved in them. If you are in them it is so tense it’s almost impossible to get any enjoyment from them but if you’ve finished in the top two it is good fun as you hope your choice of clubs come through.
I was asked this week and said I’d like a Hull v Sheffield Wednesday final so immediately I assumed I’d be watching Derby against Brighton – but it looks as if my wish is going to come true. Wednesday won their first leg 2-0 last night and this afternoon Hull have gone one better with a 3-0 win at Pride Park against Derby.
After a decent enough start by Derby, they fell a goal behind through Abel Hernandez on the half hour. Bradley Johnson gave the ball away and the chance was Hull’s after former Claret Jason Shackell made a half hearted attempt at retrieving the situation.
That was after half an hour but five minutes before half time Shackell doubled Hull’s lead, diverting a ball into his own net and there never looked any likelihood of a Derby comeback.
Hull looked in total control in the second half and seemed to be moving to a 2-0 win with ease but a late Derby corner came to nothing, Hull broke quickly and in the eight minute of stoppage time scored again when right back Moses Odubajo set up left back Andrew Robertson to fire home.
Last night, Sky were constantly telling us no team has ever come back from two behind in a Championship play-off so it looks as though the Rams are now well and truly Shackelled with the ambitious central defender set for another season in the Championship as his former club look forward to Premier League football.
The second legs will be played on Monday and Tuesday of next week with the Brighton v Sheffield Wednesday game to come first.Share this page :
