real sociedad badgeBurnley’s pre-season schedule will come to an end on Friday 5th August with a home friendly against La Liga club Real Sociedad.

The game will kick off at 7 p.m.

They are not the first Spanish club to come to Turf Moor in recent years. We were held to a 0-0 draw by Malaga in 2005 and just two years ago we played out an enjoyable 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo in a game we twice led through goals from Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Real Sociedad ended last season in 9th place in La Liga, their sixth in the league since winning promotion as champions of Segunda Division in 2010. It’s the third time in those six seasons that they’ve finished in the top ten but they are some way behind the fourth place finish of 2012/13.

Four British managers have been in charge in their history. It’s unlikely that anyone will remember the first; that was Harry Lowe, a former Spurs defender, who was manager between 1930-35. John Toshack managed them on three separate occasions, from 1985-1989, then from 1991-1994 and more recently from 2000 to 2002. Toshack went on to manager Wales as did current Welsh boss Chris Coleman who was in charge at the Anoeta Stadium from July 2007 to January 2008.

They kicked off last season under the management of David Moyes, but he lost his job on 9th November of last year, one day short of a year in the role, with the club in 16th place. He was replaced by Eusebio Sacristán later that day.

Playing at Burnley will not be their only summer involvement in England. Earlier this month they signed Southampton’s Juanmi on a five year deal and they will play Middlesbrough on the Saturday after the Burnley game.
