Robinson to referee the derby
Tim Robinson will referee tonight’s derby at Ewood Park in what will he his fourth Burnley game this season having refereed our away league games at Sunderland and Hull City, either side of the FA Cup tie at Bournemouth.
Robinson had twice previously refereed Burnley games prior to this season. His first Burnley game was the 2-0 home win against Rotherham in 2016, the day Neil Warnock accused him of guessing and his second was in the Premier League four seasons later when we beat Newcastle 1-0; this time Steve Bruce being very critical of him.
It’s noticeable that all five games have ended in victory but that won’t count for anything tonight; we can just hope that the record continues.
That game against Newcastle in 2019 was his only Premier League game until this season but he’s added two more in the last few weeks, at Wolves on the first Saturday in March and at Crystal Palace four weeks later. That suggests he’s a favourite for promotion this summer.
Other than those two games, all of his other games this season have been either in the Championship or in one of the two cup competitions. There have been 38 games in total in which he’s shown 148 yellow and seven red cards.
Of those yellows, 66 have gone to home team players with 82 to away team players. Four of the seven red cards have gone to home team players which includes one in his most recent game when he sent off Reading’s Andy Carroll, giving him a second yellow for deliberate handball. Reading’s Joe Lumley, Tom Holmes and Jeff Hendrick were yellowed along with Carroll and Luton duo Cody Drameh and Alfie Doughty.
Fourth official tonight is James Bell whose one Burnley game was our 5-1 win at Wigan back in August.
