Wayne Rooney left Derby County during the summer but there’s a Rooney back at Pride Park today with Jake Rooney, Wayne’s cousin, signing a deal with the League One club having opted not to sign a deal with the Clarets.

The 18-year-old central defender has come through the youth team at Burnley having joined us at the age of 14, but he turned down the opportunity to stay at Turf Moor. He was one of six young players offered new contracts but only three of them – Finn Armstrong, Dara Costelloe and Joe McGlynn – signed them with Rob Harker moving to Halifax, Ben Woods looking for a new club and Rooney moving to Derby.

He’s been training with them for much of pre-season and then last few days have provided him with double delight for him. He signed a deal with the Rams today having captained their under-21 team in a Premier League 2 game against Leeds last Friday at Pride Park.

Named as our youth team player of the year in 2020/21, he had established himself as a member of our own Premier League 2 squad last season but moves on having impressed at Derby during pre-season which included playing games for their first team.

We wish Jake well at Derby.
