Sam lands Player of the Month Award
As expected, Rotherham’s Neil Warnock was confirmed this morning as the Championship’s Manager of the Month for March but it is good news for Burnley too with Sam Vokes winning the player award.
Sam’s been in outstanding form recently, and that stretches into a period some time before March. However, in the last month, in four games, he scored four times, getting two in the 3-2 win at Fulham, scoring the second as we beat Huddersfield 3-1 and then the goal against Wolves at home in the 1-1 draw that was just a couple of minutes away from being a win.
I think, in the last three months, he’s been back to the sort of form he showed in the 2013/14 season when he scored 20 league goals before suffering the serious injury in the home game against Leicester.
Vokes himself said: “I’m feeling great. It’s coinciding with the team at the moment and how we’re all playing. As a striker, the team’s creating a lot of chances so it’s great to be in a team that’s playing that way and I’ve managed to get on the end of a couple in the last few games.”
Manager Sean Dyche singled out Sam for special praise very recently and said on hearing the news of his award: “We are delighted for Sam. He has got stronger and stronger as the season has progressed and his continued thirst to improve and deliver performances has been rightly recognised with this award.”
Sky summariser Don Goodman is a member of the panel who decides the winners of these awards, and he added: “Having been largely overshadowed by the wonderful Andre Gray’s goalscoring feats for most of the season, Sam Vokes showed Burnley what they were missing during his long lay-off with some vital goals in March.
“Vokes is a handful for any defender in the Championship and a real team player who will be crucial in Burnley’s battle to get back to the Premier League.”
In my match preview for the Forest game in February, looking back at the previous home game against us when Vokes was superb and scored twice, I simply asked: “Play it again Sam.” He did, and he’s been playing it again time and time in recent months.
This award is fully deserved and Up the Clarets send their congratulations.Share this page :
