Search for central midfielders begins

We’ve got our goalkeeper and we’ve got the back four, and today we start the search for two midfielders to place in the best Burnley team of the last ten years.

It all starts at Stoke as we kicked off our first Premier League season and that day the two central midfielders in the team were Graham Alexander (48 league starts in the ten year period) and Chris McCann (96). With McCann injured, others were tried such as Joey Gudjonsson, but the only other two who qualify for the vote are Kevin McDonald )15) and Jack Cork (119 in all three spells).

Following relegation, Dean Marney (187) was added to the squad and Marvin Bartley (36) joined us in January 2011 but it was another eighteen months before we added a new central defender in Brian Stock (20).

David Jones (122) was an early signing for Sean Dyche in 2013 and he partnered Marney during the first promotion and then lined up alongside Joey Barton (49) for the title winning 2015/16 season.

With Barton moving to Rangers, Jones signing for Sheffield Wednesday, there were some new midfielders to come in the summer transfer window three years ago. Steven Defour (46) was the first of them and he was followed soon after by Jeff Hendrick (85) with the final name on the list Ashley Westwood (49) signing in January 2017.

The only midfield addition since has been Cork who had already qualified for the vote with his loans here in 2009/10 and 2010/11.
