Second big win moves youth team up the league
With just one win in the first six games, it looked a difficult assignment for the under-18s last Saturday when they travelled to play Crewe who were second in the U18 Professional Development League at kick off.
Our only previous victory had come at QPR two weeks earlier where we won 6-2 and it was another big victory at Crewe where Jack Rogers, Lucas Wane and Logan Carlin all scored, Wane getting two, in a 4-0 win.
We were behind Sheffield United on goal difference before the game but they were beaten at leaders Birmingham. We also went head of Coventry on goal difference; they’d been beaten at home by Barnsley on the Friday.
Birmingham still lead the league but with Crewe having dropped points, it’s Sheffield Wednesday who have moved into third place. Down at the other end of the table, Peterborough were without a game and Wigan were the team beaten by Sheffield Wednesday; both remain without a point.
In the south, top played second and top beat second. That was Bristol City recording a victory over Watford. It’s allowed Bristol City to increase their lead at the top to eight points with Charlton now in second place.
Poor QPR haven’t had the best of fortune during September. They were beaten 9-0 at Fleetwood and then lost that game against us 6-2. In their third and final game of the month last Saturday, they fell to a 7-0 defeat at Ipswich bringing the total number of goals conceded to 22 in three games.
They are still not bottom though; that’s Cardiff although they are now only two points adrift after their first in of the season, and some win too, a 5-1 victory at Bournemouth.
There is a full fixture list this week with Burnley at home against Wigan.
The player featured this week is midfielder Callum West who was signed from Macclesfield last year.
