Michael Oliver will referee our home game against Chelsea tomorrow in what will be his second Burnley game of the season having previously taken charge of our 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium against Brighton & Hove Albion.

He’s no stranger to Burnley games. He refereed us three times in each of the two previous seasons and tomorrow will be the 18th time he’s refereed a Burnley game and it will be the 11th time in the Premier League. It won’t be his first Burnley v Chelsea game either; he was in charge on the night we opened our 2014/15 season with Chelsea’s 3-1 win at the Turf on a night when he upset their manager Jose Mourinho for yellow carding Diego Costa for diving.

How do we view him? He’s definitely had his bad games refereeing us but, in fairness, they came in the earlier games, particularly those against Swansea and the 2011/12 game against Blackpool. From those early days he hasn’t caused too many problems at all and that’s reflected in him currently sitting in 5th place in RATE THE REF with a rating of 71.59 out of 100.

Tomorrow will be his eighth game domestically with all of them in the Premier League and in the seven to date there have been 25 yellow cards of which 11 have been given to home team players and 14 to away team players. He can add another 19 yellow cards and one red card to that total from three European games, one in each of the Champions and Europa Leagues and more recently in a Euro 2020 qualifier between Norway and Spain. He hasn’t sent off a player in a domestic match since dismissing Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles in a 3-0 defeat at Leicester last April.

His most recent Premier League game was Crystal Palace’s 2-1 win at West Ham three weeks ago in which there were five yellow cards which went to West Ham trio Ryan Fredericks, Andriy Yarmolenko and Sebastian Haller along with Palace duo Joel Ward and Christian Benteke.
