witton 1000x500Having backed up the first team at Alfreton and Kidderminster last Saturday, the under-23 team are back in action tonight for their second public pre-season game.

Last Tuesday we beat Colne 2-0 at Holt House with late goals from Olatunde Bayode, who made a late appearance as a substitute in the game at Kidderminster, and Robbie Leitch.

I’ve looked back through the records and the only previous occasion I can see that we’ve played Witton was in a friendly in 1988 when we were a fourth division club while there have been few links between the two clubs although twice in the 1960s players moved from one to the other.

Chris Nicholl, who went on to have a successful career with Aston Villa and Southampton, joined Witton in 1966 having been released by Burnley and almost three years later we signed goalkeeper Peter Mellor from them.

Witton are now set to play in the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik (Northern Premier) League having won promotion last season, finishing 2nd in Division One South behind Shaw Lane and winning the play-offs having ended the league season 17 points clear of third place Spalding United.

For Burnley, and coach Michael Duff, it is the next pre-season game, with four more to follow this one, as we prepare for our first ever season in the Professional Development League.

Kick off tonight at Wincham Park is 7:30 p.m.
