Senior in move to Morecambe
Former Burnley right-back Joel Senior has signed a one-year deal with League Two club Morecambe having surprisingly been released by recently promoted Carlisle.
Senior spent one season at Burnley having been signed from non-league at Curzon Ashton. He was twenty at the time and went into the then under-23 squad but it was a season that was ended early because of the pandemic. He didn’t have too many opportunities and was released at the end of that season.
He dropped back into non-league at Altrincham but in January last year, Carlisle snapped him up and he went straight into their first team and made his Football League debut against Hartlepool on 18th January. The good fortune wasn’t to last; in his fourth league appearance two weeks later, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury at Salford.
That ruled him out for almost a year but he finally made his comeback game on New Year’s Day this year at Doncaster and settled back into a regular slot in the team. His final three games for Carlisle were in the play-offs. He started all three and his last appearance for Carlisle was therefore at Wembley when they beat Stockport on penalties although he didn’t take one of the spot kicks.
Given his place in the side, it was a surprise that Paul Simpson released him but yesterday he signed a one-year deal with Morecambe and their boss, and former Claret Derek Adams said: “Joel obviously had a very good season last year in being part of a promotion with Carlisle. He has shown throughout his career that he isn’t scared to work hard and roll his sleeves up and it’s a credit to him that his journey has taken him to this stage. Joel is still only 24-years-old and still developing so there will be progress to be made in the next year and this is a good place for him to do it.”
Senior said: “I am really happy to join Morecambe. I know League Two from last season and I want to make sure that I am competitive in League Two again this season, it’s an important part of my progress and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead. I look forward to meeting the team and getting to work for the season ahead, having tasted promotion it makes me want it again.”
