I wrote in my match report how appropriate I thought it was that Ben Mee should scored our final goal of 2020, and a winning goal at that to earn the three points against Sheffield United.

It wasn’t just the goal; Ben gave another assured performance defensively too as we kept a sixth clean sheet of the season, five of those since he returned to the side, and he was a big winner with both our man of the match vote and the player ratings.

He won 70% of the man of the match vote and that meant Robbie Brady, who returned to have another good game, providing the cross that led to the corner which he took from which we scored, was second with just a 7% share. Mee’s central defensive partner James Tarkowski was third with 6%  while 5% of the vote secured fourth place for midfielder Josh Brownhill.

Mee was the winner in the player ratings. His score of 8.49 was ahead of Tarkowski who came second with 7.90. There was then something of a drop but Matt Lowton took third place with 7.17 with Brady just behind and claiming fourth place with a rating of 7.14 out of 10.

That’s ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year for Mee with Tarkowski winning five points and Brady four points. Alongside them there were two points for Lowton and one point for Brownhill.

This game brings an end to a six game December which saw four players pick up twenty points or more. The player of the month is Nick Pope, without a point in this game but with 31 in the month, seven more than Tarkowski.

Pope and Charlie Taylor started this game as joint leaders of the player of the year table and that remains with Pope winning no points and Taylor, injured early in the game, ineligible. They both have 56 points with Brownhill moving one point closer; he’s now on 51. The two central defenders are next with Tarkowski on 44 points and Mee now in fifth place in the table with 35 points.

The next vote will start this weekend to kick off 2021 with the home FA Cup tie against MK. Meanwhile the Sheffield United result, the December player of the month result and the current player of the year table are all below.
