Snow go at the Turf
Burnley’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur was called off less than an hour before kick off due to the falling snow.
Standing outside, collecting items for the foodbank, it seemed a strange decision initially with the approaches to the ground not bad at all, but the problems were inside with the inability to keep the pitch clear. Referee Peter Bankes said: “We asked officials to sweep the snow, they worked as hard as they could, but the best thing to do was call the game off an hour before.”
Sean Dyche said: “The pitch re-covers every time they clear it. The referee explained the safety angle as well so it was important to make a decision early. It fell that quick and that heavy. It’s still quite strong now. It can’t get rid of the snow that quick. It’s the lines being cleared as well – we would have to stop and clear them. It’s a joint decision with everyone concerned. We were ready for the game and I made it clear if it could be played we wanted it on, as did their manager. I can’t see how it could go ahead.”
Suggestions that the undersoil heating wasn’t on or wasn’t working can be dismissed. It had been switched on for three days and the pitch temperature was fine, it was just the amount of snow falling.
