Steel City leading the way
Had we beaten Sheffield Wednesday two days ago in our home game against them, the undere-21s would have gone second in the north group of the Professional Development League.
It didn’t quite work out as we hoped with us suffering a 4-0 defeat at Gawthorpe, and that result has seen us drop three places in the table from fourth to seventh. It also enabled Sheffield Wednesday from seventh to take second spot, ahead of Hull, Birmingham and Fleetwood on goal difference.
Those four teams all have nine points but are six points behind current north leaders Sheffield United who relentlessly continue their outstanding start to the season. Fleetwood had started Tuesday in second place but they were the Blades’ latest victims, going down to a 6-0 defeat with both Antoine Hackford and Fernando Macedo scoring for Sheffield United.
That’s 26 goals in five games now for the league leaders; winners of the league last season, they are going to take some stopping but it’s not quite so good for Peterborough whose game against Coventry has been rescheduled, leaving them still looking for their first point.
There were no games in the south group this week so that keeps QPR at the top with twelve points, a point ahead of Millwall, with Charlton, behind Cardiff on goal difference, at the bottom with five points.
This week’s fixtures kick off tomorrow with Birmingham visiting Peterborough. It ends next Tuesday with two games in the north and three in the south.
The player featured this week is central defender Logan Pye, the recent recruit from Manchester United.
