The two Sheffield clubs are back in the top two places in the Professional Development League after Sheffield United beat Barnsley 2-1 to climb above them and back into second place and just one point behind their local rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

1718 burnley christian nguessan 00 500x500It’s been a good week for the Blades and I’m sure they’ll consider second place in this league to be secondary to their first team winning two games, including the derby at Hillsborough, to go second in the Championship. But second they are, just one point behind Wednesday who do have a game in hand having not played this week.

As the games between teams in the same leagues got underway this week there were also wins for Leeds and Huddersfield against bottom of the table Bolton and Crewe respectively. The other game was our 0-0 draw at Hull.

In the south group it is League Two leading the way with Coventry going top after beating Ipswich who had led the table last week. Bristol City, whose only win came against us, are rooted to the bottom. They are four points behind Charlton who played in the highest scoring game of the week. They were beaten 4-3 at Cardiff for whom Anthony Pilkington hit a hat trick.

The league takes a break this week as the Premier League Cup gets underway. As a category 2 club, we went straight into the groups this season. Those groups have now been completed with four category 3 winners with Bournemouth, Bury, Portsmouth and Exeter beating Bristol City, Wigan, Southend and Dagenham & Redbridge respectively.

The player shown is midfielder Christian N’Guessan.
