1920 burnley vinnie steels 00 500x500Doncaster Rovers drew 1-1 yesterday in a Central League game against Scunthorpe United but there was some Burnley interest in the fixture with one of our young players featuring in the Doncaster team.

When they named their line up, Doncaster included a trialist in the number 11 shirt but subsequently the team sheet was published showing the name of Vinnie Steels who has all but become the forgotten young player at Turf Moor.

He signed from York City in July last year on a two year contract. He was just 16 at the time but had already played first team football for York and Burnley confirmed that he would be joining the under-23 squad although he mostly last season, in his few appearances, was involved at under-18 level.

Ahead of this season he was involved in the squad for some of the under-23 pre-season games, and came on as a substitute in the training ground fixture against Lancaster. Since the start of the season he was an unused substitute in the win at Charlton.

There has been speculation that he is no longer part of the plans and it’s believed he has trained with other clubs. Up the Clarets understands that at this stage it is very unlikely he will remain at Burnley after this season which makes his appearance yesterday for Doncaster very much a trial as he looks to find a new club.
