Sunday football for the under-21s
The under-21s are in action this afternoon with a home game in the Professional Development League against Coventry City.
The game was scheduled to be played tomorrow afternoon at the County Ground, Leyland but has been brought forward a day and will now go ahead this afternoon at Gawthorpe.
We’ll be hoping to complete a double over the Sky Blues, which would emulate the first team, having won the away game 3-0 back in October with a Dara Costelloe hat trick.
We go into the game in fourth place in the north group of the league on 27 points. We are behind Hull on goal difference and with this game in hand. We sit three points behind Wigan who have played two games more than ourselves. We all sit a long way behind leaders Sheffield United who currently have a 19 point advantage over Wigan.
A 3-2 win at Hull six days ago was our first victory in the league since the second week in January. Between those two wins we won just one point from three league games.
Coventry have just recovered from three successive defeats in January and February which came against the current top three. In their two most recent games they’ve drawn at Barnsley and beaten Birmingham at home. They are sixth in the table with 21 points, six behind us and from the same number of games.
In our previous seasons in this league, Coventry were in the south group which meant we played them once only with two of them at home. In the 2017/18 season we won 2-0 with goals from Olatunde Bayode and Ntumba Massanka. Two seasons later, Bayode was again a scorer in a 1-1 draw.
Today’s game kicks off at 1 p.m.
