Joey Barton had made two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Burnley, scoring the winner against Southampton and featuring at Arsenal, but he got his first start for us in the top flight in last week’s win against Leicester when he turned in a superb performance.

Was it the best game he’s played for us? I certainly wouldn’t with that suggestion and alongside Jeff Hendrick we had far too much for champions Leicester.

The pair of them have taken the top two places in both the man of the match vote and the player ratings with Barton comfortably winning both. He claimed 66% of the man of the match vote with Hendrick having a 14% share. Behind them, third and fourth places went to Ashley Barnes and Michael Keane who had 5% and 4% of the vote respectively.

In the player ratings, it was a commanding 9.11 out of 10 for Joey, his highest rating since joining us in August 2015. Hendrick scored 8.66 to take second place. The central defensive pairing of Keane and Ben Mee took the next two places; Keane was third with 8.48 and a rating of 8.15 out of 10 secured fourth place for Mee.

The result gives Barton the maximum ten points towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year with six points for Hendrick, three for Keane, two for Barnes and one for Mee.

This game brought the January fixtures to an end and Hendrick was our player of the month. He won a total of 30 points with James Tarkowski, who has done so well in the cup ties, coming second with 23 points.

But it is the central defenders leading the way for the player of the year although Keane has now reduced Mee’s lead at the top of the table to nine points. Hendrick has moved ever closer to Tom Heaton for third place but he won’t be able to pick up any points in the next four games, having been sent off in the first of then and now facing a three match ban.

You can still vote for the Watford Man of the Match until the end of today and you can still post your Player Ratings on the message board.
