When the new Premier League season gets underway the television coverage provided will not, currently, be at the level we experienced during Project Restart.

When the 2019/20 season resumed all 92 remaining games were shown live by four different broadcasters but that will not be the case in the forthcoming season. There has been a slight increase but just 220 of the 380 games will be screened live.

As Burnley fans, we know that we are not at the top of the list for television picks and this news will see a good number of our games not being shown live meaning a lot of our supporters will not be able to watch them from the comfort of their own homes at a time when they are unable to attend the games.

Premier League supporters have raised these concerns with the Premier League and the broadcasters, led by the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust with the full backing of the Football Supporters Association.

Katrina Law, co-chair of THST, said: “I  think there is a misconception among fans that they will be able to watch their team like they did in Project Restart. We definitely think there should be some provision for match going fans because of a public health emergency.”

She added: “The irony is that you will have 160 games which you can watch everywhere but the UK. This could drive fans to illegal streams of games and I can’t understand why the Premier League would want that for match going fans who cannot attend.

“We have to remember that there are many season ticket holders who won’t be able to go to games because of medical conditions. The current situation is not good enough.”

It’s a three point plan as follows.

  1. Match going fans will expect broadcast access to games which they are prevented from attending for public health / safety reasons.
  2. We’re calling on the Broadcasters, the Premier League and the Clubs to reach a solution which makes this a reality.
  3. We recognise that these are extraordinary times and that any solution would be a temporary measure.

A number of other supporters groups from the various Premier League clubs have already backed the Spurs Trust on this. We at Burnley FC Supporters Groups were quick to offer our support and we will actively play our part in putting pressure on the Premier League and the broadcasters to ensure supporters can watch all the games through legitimate broadcasters until such time as we are all able to return to our respective grounds to watch the games live.
