Anthony Taylor refereed Burnley five times last season, the last four of them at home, and he’s back at the Turf tomorrow for the visit of Arsenal.

His first Burnley game last season was the 0-0 draw at West Brom, but he subsequently refereed the home games against Everton, Brighton, Newcastle, and West Ham.

Another experienced referee, it was January 2008 when he first refereed a Burnley game, a 1-0 win against Plymouth that was Owen Coyle’s first home victory as Burnley manager.

He’s certainly had his moments in Burnley games with two in particular with two amazing penalty decisions, the one he gave us at Swansea in 2017 when Sam Vokes had actually handled the ball, and the one he didn’t give Ashley Barnes against Southampton in 2019 when he’d clearly been taken out by the goalkeeper.
It was back in February 2010 when he first took charge of a Premier League game and that’s where he is almost exclusively used now with all four of his domestic games this season at the top level.

In those four games, there have been ten yellow cards and one red card. Seven of those yellows have gone to home team players with just three to away team players. The one red card came in he 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Chelsea when he sent off Chelsea’s Reece James for handling the ball on the line, a decision he made after consulting the pitch side monitor.

His most recent game came last Saturday, Manchester United’s 4-1 home win against Newcastle. The one player carded in that game was Manchester United’s Paul Pogba.

His fourth official tomorrow is John Brooks, one of the new Select Group referees who is still to referee a Burnley game. On VAR duty, for the first time in a Burnley game is a retired referee. That’s Lee Mason whose last ever Burnley game was last season’s 2-1 home win against Wolves after which Wolves’ boss Nuno Espirito Santo said he didn’t want him to referee another Wolves game and he didn’t.
