Anthony Taylor will referee our game tonight against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns and he’ll have some familiar figures with him on the touchline.

I can’t help but think back to Taylor failing to give us a penalty in the home game against Southampton two seasons ago when their goalkeeper took out Ashley Barnes. He wasn’t helped by his dreadful assistant Adam Nunn that day while the other assistant Gary Beswick also had a bad day. Those same two were with him last season for the home game against Leicester, the last time he refereed him, and both will be with him for tonight’s game.

Tonight will be his sixth game of the season although one of those was the European Super Cup game between Bayern Munich and Sevilla while another was the Italy v Netherlands Nations League clash. In the other three, all in the Premier League, he’s issued eight yellow cards and one red card. The yellows have gone four to both home and away players while the player sent off was Manchester United’s Anthony Martial in that 6-1 defeat at Old Trafford against Spurs.

One of those three games was the Leeds v Fulham fixture which he came close to missing when stuck in traffic with Kevin Friend the fourth official ready to step in and Friend is the fourth official again tonight; his most recent Burnley game was our 2-0 win at Norwich in July. We’ve referred to two of his three Premier League games this season, just the first one missing which was another West Brom home game; he was in charge when they were beaten 3-0 by Leicester in their opening game of the season.

I saw it mentioned over the weekend that it isn’t so much important who is refereeing your game now but who is on VAR, this coming about after David Coote saw no reason to suggest any action be taken against Everton’s Jordan Pickford. At Stockley Park tonight is Darren England. His one Burnley game was memorable due to the fact that he had an appalling game when Sunderland knocked us out of the League Cup last season.
