It might not have been a victory, but last Sunday’s 0-0 home draw against Arsenal is being considered as one of our best performances for some time and when it came to the man of the match voting and the player ratings it really was a question as to which of the two full backs would come out on top.

Matt Lowton returned to the side at Manchester United in the previous league game following an injury to Phil Bardsley and he’s stepped up with two outstanding performances and I’m not sure I’ve seen a better performance from him than Sunday’s. But he had to settle for second place in the man of the match vote, simply because of the performance from Charlie Taylor on the left hand side.

The lead switched constantly over the three days of voting and it was Taylor who came out on top with 28% of the vote, just ahead of Lowton who had a 26% share. And, to complete, the defensive performance, the two central defenders took the next two places with Tarkowski claiming third place with 12% and Ben Mee, with 8% of the vote, finishing fourth.

The player ratings overall were not as high as they had been for the Old Trafford win but they were still high with all players passing seven out of ten and six of them going above eight. The top four here were exactly the same as in the vote and in the same order. Taylor took first place with a rating of 8.76 out of 10, followed by Lowton who scored 8.63. Tarkowski’s rating was 8.49 while Mee came in fourth again with a rating of 8.15 out of 10.

That means ten points for Taylor towards the Up the Clarets Player of the Year, six points for Lowton with Tarkowski and Mee collecting four and two points respectively. It means Tarkowski has moved a couple more points further ahead at the top of the table but for Taylor, he’s climbed above Jeff Hendrick into fifth place.

We won’t have a vote now until a week on Saturday when we resume at Southampton. The Arsenal result and the current player of the year table can be seen below.
