The week’s U18 Professional League fixtures, usually played on a Saturday, were spread over a six day period with Crystal Palace v Cardiff last Thursday and the clash between the two Sheffield clubs played yesterday.

1718 burnley terry mupariwa 00 500x500It all kicked off with Nottingham Forest, Burnley and Huddersfield in the top three places, all with 17 points but has ended with Huddersfield, after their 4-0 win at Burnley, going top for the first time this season as previous leaders Forest dropped after gaining a draw at Barnsley.

We’d lost top spot only two weeks earlier but we are now down to fifth after a third successive defeat. It’s been a big switch in form for the young Clarets who were previously unbeaten in six games but it has largely coincided with the commencement of games when teams started playing each other in the same groups.

We kicked off the north v north games with a win over Sheffield Wednesday and then drew against Barnsley before these three defeats. If our results have dropped, then Wednesday’s certainly have. Prior to the game against them just over five weeks ago, they were unbeaten and riding high in the league. Since they’ve picked up one point from six games.

They were beaten 3-0 by rivals Sheffield United yesterday and are now, after this week’s fixtures, bottom of the league.

It’s still very tight with only eight points separating top from bottom. Hull and Sheffield United are just a point behind Huddersfield, then come Forest followed by us.

An eight point gap in the north, but the game between top and bottom in the south group is 21 points. Leaders Palace extended their lead at the top with a win over Cardiff, while second place Millwall could only draw.

But Coventry remain down at the bottom, still pointless after nine games, their most recent game ending in a 2-0 defeat against Bristol City.
