Despite losing 2-0 yesterday at Manchester City, home boss Pep Guardiola was full of praise for the way we played against his team at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Guardiola said: “After the international break, it’s always a little bit difficult to come to a rhythm, and I know how good Burnley are. They did really well, they have good players and we played a good fifteen to twenty minutes in the first half. We created chances and the last twenty minutes we lost some tempo.

“We did really well in the second half and played really well and could’ve scored more goals. Good result, after the international break we take the victory and look what’s next.”

He added: “We run and fight for every ball, Burnley play long balls and they’re a master at this. You have to defend set pieces well and anything could’ve happened if Chris Wood had scored that goal near the end.

“The importance is improving our game. I am satisfied that the second half was better than the first. The team showed me the way we want to play and the shape we want to play in. All the guys gave everything, it doesn’t matter if the performance is good or not, it’s important that you fight for your teammates and everyone was incredible.”

Having suffered 5-0 defeats in each of our previous league and cup visits to Manchester City, Sean Dyche said after this 2-0 loss: “I think it was a better performance here. It has been tough in recent times coming here, but we did ok. They still created chances, but that is what they do.

“We had good chances ourselves and that has not been easy to do in the past. It is tough to come here and get anything, but the signs were there that all thinks were pointed in the right direction. The energy, I liked that, the belief in what we are trying to achieve as well. We didn’t just wait for the game and come to defend, we tried to take the game on. There were a lot of good things about our performance but we have to take our chances.”

There was special praise from them manager for the two central defenders. “The two centre-halves were both outstanding,” he said. “It is a learning curve for Nathan, I said that before the game. He has a really good attitude and the way he is learning and adapting to the group.

“Tarky was outstanding again, but yeah, it is good signs for Nathan, he is learning and learning well. It is not easy coming to these parts and he just got on with it, nice and calmly. He has a good attitude and I’m really impressed. He is still relatively young as well but continues to be a good player for us.”
