On 26th May, just thirty days ago, we revealed that our former defender, Steve Cotterill’s first Burnley signing, was back in management having taken over at Swindon Town, newly relegated to League Two.

It hasn’t lasted long. Today Swindon confirmed the departure of both McGreal and his recently appointed assistant Rene Gilmartin and that adds to, on a day of chaos, the departure of long standing CEO Steve Anderson just a couple of hours after it had been announced that he no longer had significant control and that his role was in name only.

While Swindon thanked McGreal and Gilmartin, who joined five days after the managerial appointment, for their hard work and professionalism during which time they’d made two signings and added: “We would like to wish them both the best for the future.”

In a joint statement, McGreal and Gilmartin said: “This is a decision we both have made, as we feel we are not able to carry out our duties as manager and assistant manager.

“Our intention from day one was to build a football team to compete in this league, but unfortunately due to the current circumstances the club is facing, we do not feel we are able to do that.

“As mentioned earlier this week, we have signings ready to be announced. However, the legal proceedings involving the ownership has not allowed us to do so, making our positions untenable.”

Those legal proceedings concern the ownership of the club.
