Max Thompson, a member of our under-23 squad, has today left Burnley to join Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

Thompson joined the Clarets from Everton in 2019 and immediately claimed a place in the under-18s, playing as a striker.

By the end of the 2019/20 season, he’d made a first team bow, coming on as a late substitute at Manchester City, after which he received some positive words from David Silva.

The last two seasons have generally seen him used on the right hand side of the pitch rather than up front but in the 2020/21 season he was still the top goalscorer for us in Premier League 2.

He has signed a two-year deal and will initially go into their under-21 squad and is set to travel with his new team to Canada for pre-season.

Thompson said: “It feels a long time coming to sign here, as I came close back in January. I would describe myself as a goalscorer and a direct player. I’m eager to learn from all the coaching staff and make serious progress here.”

We wish Max the very best at Sunderland.
