Three point lead for Bolton
Bolton squandered the opportunity to stretch their lead at the top of the Professional Development League to six points when they played their game in hand yesterday against next to bottom Crewe.
They kicked off this last set of fixtures above Sheffield Wednesday on goal difference and moved three points ahead at the top when they beat us last Wednesday night. With Wednesday then surprisingly losing at Leeds two days later, they had the opportunity to stretch that lead to six points yesterday but went down to a 1-0 defeat at Crewe, a result that has seen Crewe move seven points ahead of us.
Wednesday are now only ahead of rivals Sheffield United on goal difference after the Blades recorded a fine 5-0 away win at Nottingham Forest. All five goals came in the first half with Jake Wright scoring four of them, becoming the first player to score four in a game this season in the Professional Development League.
Huddersfield and Hull also had wins with Hull’s taking them into fourth place just two points behind the Sheffield duo.
There was only one fixture in the south group which saw Charlton beat Coventry when a win for the Sky Blues would have closed the gap on leaders Crystal Palace to six points.
Yesterday, a number of teams, including ourselves, were in Premier League Cup action. All the group games would now have been completed but for one postponement last week and two yesterday but those three outstanding fixtures leave only one place in the last 16 still to be won.
Burnley will probably rue the 3-0 defeat at Colchester on 9th February. A win in that game, as was expected, would have made yesterday’s game against Swansea academic for us with us having gone through.
The teams through are:
Group A: Derby and Middlesbrough
Group B: Blackburn and Southampton
Group C: Wolves and Bournemouth
Group D: Newcastle and Swansea
Group E: Aston Villa and Sheffield United
Group F: Leicester and Everton
Group G: Liverpool and either Bristol City or Stoke
Group H: Exeter and Brighton
The player shown this week is striker Tommy Wood.
