Three teams closing in on leaders
Blackpool are top of the Youth Alliance League but, without a game, they had to sit and watch last Saturday as all of Walsall, Burnley and Rochdale closed in on them with victories.
Two of the three could pass them if they won their games in hand. Walsall are four points behind with two games in hand while Rochdale are seven points from the top with three games in hand. Even Burnley, currently third, can catch Blackpool if they won both of the games in hand.
The consequence of Saturday’s results is that the winners will now come from that top four. Port Vale, beaten by both Rochdale and Burnley last week, are now out of the running and Bury are almost in the same position after falling to a heavy defeat against struggling Carlisle.
Carlisle and Wrexham have been swapping places at the bottom in recent weeks with the one suffering the heaviest defeat usually dropping into bottom place on goal difference. Both won points though last Saturday with Carlisle’s win now taking them two points clear and also above Tranmere on goal difference.
Back to that battle at the top and Blackpool, besides having the points on the board, have another big advantage with by the far the best goal difference.
All four have home games this coming Saturday. Blackpool face Shrewsbury, Wigan are Walsall’s visitors, Burnley host Fleetwood and Rochdale will play bottom club Wrexham. But before that Burnley and Rochdale face each other tomorrow afternoon. Whoever wins that one will move into second place.
