In our home game against Bournemouth last May, referee Paul Tierney blew the final whistle on our 2017/18 Premier League season and tomorrow he’ll blow the first Turf Moor Premier League whistle of this season when he gets our home game against Watford underway.

It will be the Wigan referee’s tenth Burnley game and that includes four of our games from last season. He was in charge of our away games at Leicester, Huddersfield  and Watford (tomorrow’s opponents) and the one Burnley fans will look back on was the 0-0 draw at Huddersfield when, incredibly, he failed to award a penalty when Jeff Hendrick was brought down by their goalkeeper, instead shouting ‘No contact’ at anyone prepared to listen.

It’s not the only bad game he’s had either, that’s why you will see him at the bottom of the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of just 50.28 and he has the lowest score of anyone in three of the categories while being second worst in fitness and positioning.

The one thing you probably shouldn’t expect is too many cards. Last season he handed out just 81 yellow cards in 32 games with 37 of them going the way of home team players and 44 to away team players. There were no red card; the last player he sent off was Watford’s Miguel Britos in a 2-0 win for them at home to West Brom in April 2017.

He hasn’t refereed a competitive game yet this season so his last game was that at the Turf between Burnley and Bournemouth when there were no cards.

The assistant referees are Adrian Holmes and Mick McDonough. The fourth official is Chris Kavanagh (Manchester) whose last Burnley game was last season’s 2-1 home win against Everton.
