Tomorrow’s game against Newcastle will be refereed by Paul Tierney in what will be his first Burnley game since our 3-2 home win against Aston Villa back in January.

It might be his first Burnley game for some time but this will be his fifth Newcastle game since he last refereed us. He had their game at Manchester United and then the home game against Aston Villa last season and he’s already been at St. James’ Park twice previously this season for their home games against Southampton and Chelsea.

He’s not proved to be a popular referee with Burnley fans and currently sits next to bottom in the RATE THE REF Table with a rating of 48.18 out of 100. I think we can point to a few difficult games he’s had and often to the denial of a clear penalty at Huddersfield almost four years ago.

He’s very much a Premier League referee now. He did referee a couple of Championship games last season but in 2021/22 has been used exclusively in the Premier League after he started his season with the Community Shield game between Leicester and Manchester City.

He’s refereed ten Premier League games this season in which there have been 41 yellow cards of which 23 have gone to home team players and 18 to away team players. His last red card was almost a year ago; on that occasion he dismissed Arsenal’s Gabriel in their 1-1 home draw against Southampton.

His last game was Wednesday’s Merseyside derby and he was busy in terms of cards. Everton had Lucas Digne, Allan, Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray carded alongside Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson and Thiago.

His fourth official tomorrow is Michael Salisbury who refereed for the first time in the Premier League when he took charge of the Crystal Palace v Aston Villa game. Lee Mason, who retired at the end of last season as a referee, will be on VAR.
