Our League Cup tie tonight against Sheffield United will be refereed by Paul Tierney whose only Burnley game last season was the 3-0 win at Watford back in November.

He used his own hands and then got a helping hand that day. Having awarded a dubious looking free kick to Watford and deciding that Ashley Westwood hadn’t retreated ten yards, he pushed him out of the way and then yellow carded the player when he had something to say about it.

With us leading 1-0, Ashley Barnes went down in the box. Tierney saw nothing in it and Watford raced down the pitch to win a corner on the right wing. We had a delay before they could take the corner, a corner they were never able to take. VAR official Peter Bankes saw the foul on Barnes and the ball had to go down to the other end for a Burnley penalty which Barnes himself converted.

His performance that day took his RATE THE REF score down slightly to 48.18 out of 100 with only Bankes of the current Select Group 1 officials below him in the currently suspended table.

Tonight will be his first game this season but in 2019/20 he refereed a total of 32 domestic games in which there were 108 yellow and three red cards. There were a flurry of yellow cards shown to home team players in the closing weeks of the season which balanced things up somewhat but of those yellow cards, 48 went to home players and 60 to away players.

His three red cards all came in one January week. On the 11th of the month he dismissed Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in their 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace. Just one week later, Bournemouth’s Steve Cook and then Ben Godfrey of Norwich were both sent off in Norwich’s 1-0 win at Carrow Road.

No VAR official has been named tonight which suggests we won’t be using it, but David Coote, who refereed our 2-0 home win at Norwich and the 1-1 draw at Liverpool last season, will be the fourth official.
