Tierney yet again for an away game
Tonight sees us play our nineteenth and final away game in this season’s Premier League and, astonishingly, the game will be refereed by Paul Tierney who has already refereed our away games against Newcastle United, Leeds United, Brentford and West Ham United this season.
That’s five out of nineteen on the road, over a quarter of our away games allocated to the same referee during which time he hasn’t refereed a game at Turf Moor. Given the first was at Newcastle, it’s five in twelve and three in the last six. The last time he took charge of a game at home was in January last year when we beat tonight’s opponents Aston Villa 3-2 and that was his only Burnley game in the Premier League last season.
His performances have earned him 18th place in RATE THE REF with a rating of just 51.80 out of 100, ahead of only Tony Harrington and Peter Bankes.
This season he’s refereed 29 games in which there have been 110 yellow and three red cards. Three of those yellows were at Wembley in the Community Shield, 55 of the others have gone to home team players with 52 to away team players.
He sent off Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson at Spurs back in December on a day when he and the VAR official failed to deal with Harry Kane. He also sent off Nathan Collins at Brentford.
Red card number three came in his most recent game a week ago tonight, again at Spurs, when Rob Holding received two yellow cards. On the night he also yellow carded Spurs’ Ben Davies along with Arsenal’s Martin Ødegaard, Granit Xhaka and Emile Smith Rowe.
Fourth official tonight is Craig Pawson who refereed our recent away game at Watford. John Brooks is on VAR duty; he refereed out draw at Wolves in December.
