Tom Heaton was chosen to play in goal for our best team of the last ten years. It wasn’t a close vote and neither was the one to choose the right-back which has been won convincingly by Kieran Trippier.

1112 burnley kieran trippier 00 300x300Tripps came into Burnley during the 2011 pre-season following news that Tyrone Mears was on his way to Bolton. He made his debut in a friendly at Oldham and went on to make the right-back position his own for four years. Relegation from the Premier League saw him move on to Spurs where he’s spent four years, played in a Champions League final and won England caps, even scoring in a World Cup semi-final.

In suggesting he won convincingly, that’s something of an understatement. He polled no less than 94% of the vote, a  total of 972 out of 1,033 votes cast, which left the other four candidates fighting for second place.

Current players Matt Lowton and Phil Bardsley took second and third place. Lowton picked up 30 votes while Bardsley won 16. Lowton won his first team place just before Christmas 2015 and had been first choice since until the recently ended 2018/19 season when he had a battle with Bardsley for the position.

Mears, who Trippier replaced eight years ago, came in fourth with eight votes, just one more than Tendayi Darikwa, whose first team appearances were all in the first half of the 2015/16 season, who won seven votes.

The left-back vote will be underway later today.

The Full Result

94% – Kieran Trippier
3% – Matt Lowton
2% – Phil Bardsley
1% – Tyrone Mears
1% – Tendayi Darikwa
