Two more ex-Clarets released
Two former Burnley team mates have found themselves released from their clubs today with Scott Arfield leaving Rangers and Tendayi Darikwa departing Wigan Athletic.
Arfield has completed five years at Rangers since leaving Burnley in the summer of 2018, having previously spent five years as a Claret. He’s gone on to make over 230 appearances for the Scottish club in which he’s scored 43 goals.
A terrific signing on a free transfer in 2013 following his release from Huddersfield, he became a hugely popular player at Burnley, never more so than when he scored the winner at Ewood in October 2015.
He made his final Burnley appearance in February 2018, coming on as a substitute for Aaron Lennon in a 1-0 defeat at Swansea while his last goal was the winner against Watford right on half time two months earlier.
Tendayi Darikwa has captained Wigan this season in the Championship but he’s leaving having played over a hundred league games for them. Signed by us in the summer of 2015, he stepped in due to Matt Lowton’s injury and played the first 21 games of the 2015/16 Championship season. He was left out after a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough and didn’t play again in the league for us in the rest of his two years at Turf Moor.
He played in all the cup ties in his last season at Burnley, the last of them coming against Lincoln in the fifth round of the FA Cup and at the end of that season he moved on to Nottingham Forest making his debut against us in a pre-season friendly.
His time at Forest was blighted with an ACL injury but he was there for three and a half years before joining Wigan in January 2021, going on to captain the club. One of seven players released by the Latics today, they singled him out and the club said of him: “We would like to pay a special tribute to our outgoing captain Tendayi Darikwa for his excellent service over the last two and a half years. All the best for the future, Skip.”
