Under-18s move up the table after Sunderland win
The under-18s beat Stoke to kick off what is our first ever season in the U18 Premier League but had then suffered four successive defeats until beating bottom of the league Sunderland last week, a result that has moved us up a further two places in the table.
I suppose Sunderland is the easiest fixture in this league. They haven’t picked up a single point since drawing at Manchester United in April 2019 and that’s now a run of 25 consecutive defeats. Having said that, someone will drop points against them some time and thankfully it wasn’t us.
We led 3-0 at half time before they pulled one back from the penalty spot but it was the latter stage of the first half, when we scored all our three goals through Dylan Moonan, Sam Unwin and Michael Mellon, that impressed coach Tony Philliskirk, a period when we dominated.
We now sit a couple of points ahead of both Leeds and Stoke while Blackburn are a point further behind before we see the league propped up by the two north east clubs.
This league is not one that will be affected by a lack of spectators but it was interesting that ours was one of five away wins in the weekend’s six games in the north league with Liverpool and Manchester United both winning 4-0. I suspect Liverpool’s will have been enjoyed the most given it was against Everton.
The only home winners were Wolves against Leeds while in the south both Chelsea and Crystal Palace were able to record home victories. Aston Villa, still top, dropped points for the first time while the 4-4 draw between Spurs and Reading reminded me very much of a game Burnley played at White Hart Lane almost sixty years ago. No one came from 4-0 down to draw in this one though although Reading did lead 3-0 and 4-1.
This week will see us play the one fixture that was on the list last season with Leeds our next opponents, another of the teams who moved up to category one this year.
