The under-21s return to Professional Development League action for the first time in over two weeks with an away fixture against Birmingham City.

We go into the game having won last time out in the league against Sheffield United with a Darko Churlinov goal and we currently sit in sixth place in the table with fourteen points from nine games.

Our opponents Birmingham are second with twenty-one points but they have played two games more than us and will be looking to close the six point gap between them and league leaders Sheffield United.

Today will be the fifth time we’ve played away games against us since we won Category 2 status in 2017. We’ve played them three times in the Professional Development League, all of which have been drawn and beaten them in Premier League 2 two seasons ago when we both had Category 1 academies.

It was 2-2 in 2017/18 with J Thomas scoring for us after we’d benefitted from an own goal. Olatunde Bayode scored in the 1-1 draw in the following season and last season it was again 1-1 when loanee Halil Dervişoğlu scored our goal. In 2-1 win in 2021/22, the score was 2-1 with both Ne-Jai Tucker and Michael Mellon on the scoresheet for Burnley after Kieran Wakefield had given Birmingham the lead.

Today’s game will be played at their training ground and kicks off at 2 p.m.

UPDATE: Kick off is now 2:45 p.m. which became 2:20 p.m.
