Under-21s come from behind to beat Coventry
A goal down from a soft looking penalty just past the hour, we came back with two second half goals from Halil Dervişoğlu and Darko Churlinov to win the game 2-1.
Like the first team game yesterday, this was another game that we dominated and it was something of a shock that we actually fell behind although it came from a penalty that, at best, looked soft. Coventry’s Tom Costelloe made no mistake and gave Denis Franchi no chance of keeping it out.
With three first team squad members in the team, playing in front of the watching eyes of manager Vincent Kompany, the two goalscorers and Samuel Bastien, we looked for a quick equaliser and were close to getting one just a couple of minutes later only for a Jez Davies shot to hit the post.
Behind at half time, Coventry probably had their best spell in the early part of the second half but that soon changed as it followed the pattern of the first half.
Just past the hour, we introduced Jack McEvilly, a central defender and the first of two under-16s to feature. Three minutes later, we were level. From a corner, we got in one shot that was blocked and fell to Dervişoğlu who made no mistake from close range.
Dervişoğlu was involved in the second goal too. Picking the ball up the right, he got into the penalty box before playing the ball across to Churlinov (pictured) who had the easy task of hitting the ball home into the empty net.
Churlinov was one of two players substituted within a couple of minutes and this gave right winger Vernon Masara, the other under-16 to come on along with Ne-Jai Tucker.
That was it, but we were so close to adding a third right at the end but Bastien saw his shot hammer against the underside of the bar. A 2-1 win it was and although it keeps us in fourth place, we are now level on points with both Hull, who have also won this weekend, and Wigan with a game in hand on both of them.
