The under-21s travel to Bramall Lane today to take on a Sheffield United team who have all but clinched the title in the northern group of the Professional Development League.

The currently sit top with 49 points; a sixteen point advantage over both Wigan and Hull and with a game in hand. Wigan are now second having recorded a 5-1 win over Hull yesterday, the teams swapping places with Wigan having the better goal difference.

Having suffered that crushing defeat at Barnsley last week, we are now three points behind them but with two games in hand although our goal difference, at minus seven, is much worse than the two teams directly above us.

Sheffield United go into the game on the back of six successive wins. The last time they dropped points was in mid-January when they drew 1-1 at Hull.

The home game against Sheffield United back in October was a close affair but for a time it didn’t look as though it would be. We trailed 3-0 but came back with goals from Marcel Lewis and Dara Costelloe before seeing a Kevin Long header hit the goalkeeper’s face in the final minute of stoppage time.

In previous seasons in this league, we’ve won two and lost one of our away games against Sheffield United. We were beaten 1-0 in 2017/18 but won 3-1 in the next season when Dwight McNeil scored our first goal with Dan Agyei scoring the next two. In 2019/20, Rob Harker scored twice with Adam Phillips scoring a third in a 3-0 win.

Kick off today at Bramall Lane is 2 p.m. and admission is free of charge.
