Having won at Coventry three days ago, the under-21s are quickly back in Professional Development League action this afternoon with another away game, this time against Crewe Alexandra.

Although remaining in sixth place in the table, last Friday’s win took us seven points clear of Coventry who sit one place below us and it has moved us within four points of Barnsley who are currently the team directly above us and a team over whom we have four games in hand.

Andy Farrell indicated there would be changes for this afternoon’s game which suggests there could be starts for some of those players who were used as substitutes at Coventry. With no goalkeeper on the bench, all of Basilio Rieno Socoliche, Mikey O’Neill Ackeme Francis-Burrell, Michael Parker and Joe Ashton got some game time as substitutes.

Our opponents Crewe are currently bottom of the eleven teams in the north group table. They are four points behind Peterborough although they have played three games less. They moved closer to Peterborough with a 4-3 away win against them a week ago but that was just their third win of the season having previously won 4-0 at home against Colchester in August and then 6-4 at Fleetwood in September.

In that win at Peterborough, they trailed 1-0 and 2-1 but then took a 3-2 lead before eventually winning the game with a Stan Dancey goal. Two of Crewe’s goals were scored by Jack Parry which took his total for the season to five, one behind the six scored by their leading scorer Calum Agius.

Previous league visits to Crewe have ended evenly with both of us winning once alongside two draws. The first of them in October 2017 ended in a 2-0 defeat but was Dean Marney’s first outing having suffered his ruptured ACL at Arsenal at the beginning of the year.

Jordan Cropper scored in a 1-1 draw in the 2018/19 season and in the next season we won 3-0 with Joel Mumbongo scoring twice and Ne-Jai Tucker also netting in what was our last league game before the season was cancelled. Last season, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Gresty Road and, as always there, admission is free of charge.
