The under-21s are in Professional Development League action this afternoon with the away game against Wigan Athletic, a game that gives both teams the opportunity to move up the table.

We will kick off in seventh place in the league table with seven points from our five games; Wigan are one place better courtesy of a better goal difference. Both of us have won two, drawn one and lost two of our games this season. We both sit two points behind the three teams immediately above us with only Hull of those three teams in action today so a win for either would guarantee a fourth place for a day at least.

Wigan are the team who can boast the best most recent result. They had a shock 3-1 win at Birmingham a week last Friday before we fell to a big 4-0 defeat at Gawthorpe against Sheffield Wednesday a week ago today, this after a good run of recent results.

We’ve played at Wigan in this league just twice. They stepped up to Category 2 ahead of the 2019/20 season and our game there that season ended in a 1-1 draw. Lewis Richardson gave us the lead only for Ali Koiki to score an own goal to level things up. We missed a great opportunity to win it in the second half when we were awarded a penalty but Rob Harker failed to score from the spot.

Our only other game at Wigan came last season. Dara Costelloe and Benn Ward, two players currently out on loan, scored in a 2-0 win with the Clarets lining up: Denis Franchi, CJ Egan-Riley, Kevin Long (Benn Ward 70), Luke McNally, Owen Dodgson, Ne-Jai Tucker, Joe Bauress, Mark Helm, Marcel Lewis, Dara Costelloe (Trialist 90+1), Seb Thompson (Michael Mellon 70). Subs not used: Luke Thomas, Will Hugill. From that team, only goalkeeper Franchi is available for today’s game along with Hugill who was a substitute.

The game is being played at the DW Stadium and kicks off at 1 p.m.
